"Where are your charitable deeds now? Where are your virtuous acts? See! Your true character is finally showing itself!"
Tobit 2:14
In a word: Ouch! How quickly things can change, right? Why, just yesterday we met our friend, Tobit, who was inviting the poor and downtrodden to dinner and burying the dead, like a good guy. Today, he is falsely accusing his wife of stealing a goat, setting off this diatribe of anger from her. Sr. Joyce Rupp, in yesterday's entry in "Living Faith" talks about this head-spinning turn of events for Tobit. She likened it to us in the here and now. When things are going along well, we can be quite virtuous and well-behaved. But, things go awry and we go awry with them. Our goodness, out the window! I guess it will keep us humble, knowing how our goodness can turn on a dime. It is reassuring for us to remember, that God loves us, even when our true character shows itself. God knows our true character better than anyone...and loves us all the same. That doesn't excuse our misbehavior one bit. To the contrary, it should make us want to return the love back to God, by loving those around us and treating them the way God loves them. Love, heidi
